RE: This morning in Elkhart, Indiana

CONGRATS. Now keep reading about all the mistakes we make so you can avoid them. Number one rule is have a checklist modified for your trailer and FOLLOW it step by step. I know it sounds stupid and slow, but it is actually faster because you don't have to pause and think "did I do this?? That?? omg did I forget the other thing???". You get the picture.
I speak from experience. I am the example you don't want to follow.

RE: What would you have done?

Sorry I can not do something that I could not bring myself to comfortably ask someone else to do for me. Asking someone else to move my trailer for me is just too much. Especially if I just wanted to try out 4 or 5 other sites. As someone posted there are pros that do this for a fee. They know the right kinds of questions to establish insurance, ownership, or other issues that I hav not even thought of. Too many unknowns to put myself at risk. Divorce/repo/stolen/college-prank...??

RE: Brake Controller

It depends on if you have grandkids. Mine can adjust everything with a dial and throw every switch in 2 seconds flat. My point is always check the setpoint and boost. I hate surprises.

RE: Bay door clasps??

This one has my attention. Every time I look at them I think what do-do engineer signed off on that? I don't even think metal would make me feel better. A 40 pound door hanging on by plastic fingernails is what it looks like.

RE: Did I wreck my axles??

Of course Dexter says use the frame. They don't even like you to touch thier axles. If they could, they would force you to bring them in for bearing repacking. That's like asking a barber if you need a haircut:)

RE: Seals - Marker lights -- necessary?

I'm sure you will hear differing opinions, but Unless a light is burned out, I do not open it up. usually seals around lights get kind of warm. They take a set and stick or get brittle. Opening it up could damage a perfectly good seal. If there is no sign of damage, leave it alone. Now if the lens is cracked or missing, then fix it.

RE: $190 per month for RV storage, So. Cal.

If I was running a Home Owners Association I would campaign agianst all those ugly old RVs cluttering up the area. Once I got everyone to agree about banning them I would open a storage facility nearby. Then I would gradually increase charges to the pain level. Yeah, I have an evil mind :) Nobody would really do that huh??
We have some dry cities surrounded by beer joints and liquor stores. Guess who screams loudest and suddenly gets religion when allowing alcohol sales comes up for a vote?

RE: Between the Pin box and hitch

If a salesman is trying to sell you a "teflon" disc. Run away. He not only is not telling you the truth, he is also admitting he probably know's squat about the rest of his products. At around 1000 to 2000 pounds ( sound familiar?) terflon will start to cold-flow. That is slowly squish out to the side. Not real fast, I'd guess a few weeks to a month of use and it would be paper thin in the bearing area. HDPE is that stuff they make the plastic cutting boards out of. It will wear away before it deforms.
Having said thet, you could get some spray lubricant with teflon in it that would be excellent for the remainder of the hitch parts. We used to use it for motorcycle chains because it did not attract dirt and dust.

RE: Toilet odor

This whole tale reminds me of the Aggie that claimed to build outhouses with no stink
He got a return call from an unhappy customer.
He climbed in to check things out.
When he emerged he said, " well of course it stinks,
Look what you did in there".

I don't have a memory problem...Aw heck, Now I have to run out to the mailbox to see who I am, or maybe I'll just put my sig here are refresh the screen :)
Well that didn't help, this idiot won't let me view my full name.
I know, I'll call the govm't and report myself as a Serial RV'er. That'll stir things up!

Anybody ever wear one out? I would guess that it gets lost or falls off before it actually gets too thin to use. If you really used one up, post a picture. That would be a hoot.

RE: Smokers visting Kerrville TX

Stupid. And yes, I'm an ex-smoker. However passing a law like that makes me want to start all over again. The same idiots tried to outlaw drinking back in the 20's. Yeah, that worked out well, right Mr. Capone??

RE: Ouch...These lessons are expensive

And now for the capper to the story. All this was while my daughter and grandkids were camping out using my 5ver to celebrate the end of the school year. I'm still going to work every day and not having any of the fun. Lord knows how many "mistakes" I might have made if I had been there and had the time to really concentrate on it :)
Lets just say I have been doing my part to help keep Camping World and RV mechanics in business during some really trying times for the industry. Tomorrow I'm gonna change the fuel filter in my diesel truck by myself. So if Y'all see a cloud of smoke in North Texas,,, walk, do not run to the nearest exit.
Famous redneck last words. "Hey Honey...watch this !".
I feel I must make this addition. Everything that happened could have been avoided by following (and using) a good checklist. If I had not gotten in a hurry...

RE: Forums vs. Blogs...

Lots of different ways to learn things. Read a book, watch TV, Blogs, Forums, seminars, etc. Pick one that works for you. So far in the U.S., there's room for everybody.
Although why anyone would live north of the Red River on purpose seems a little odd to me.

If they would just make trailers with overhanging eaves like houses we would never have black streaks. However the crashing and screaming sounds could get annoying.

RE: Grey water dumping - is it legal in YOUR state?

I suspect it is legal here. Otherwise why would a state park have a "No Grey Water Dumping" sign in place? If it were illegal, the sign wouldn't be needed.
When I was a kid, our kitchen sink drain went straight into an open ditch beside the house. Of course that was long, long, ago when dinosaurs roamed...

RE: Breaker trips when I use Microwave and AC

Just think of it as doing your part to "Going Green". You have to watch your power consumption, water-consumption, Waste management, etc. I know it seems a little annoying if you are used to your house with a 150Amp service panel, endless water supply, and permanent sewer connection. But remember your house ain't on wheels.

Ouch...These lessons are expensive

OK, I admit it. I am a stubborn, cranky old SOB who just cannot seem to follow directions. So I am making all the mistakes one-at-a-time. Some of them are fairly expensive. I made a few close call ones early on, but lately my altzheimer's seems to be working overtime. The first few when getting to know a fifth-wheeler were of the "almost" brand. Almost forgot to lower the tailgate and saw it just in time. Noticed that a fifth wheel tracks to the inside of a turn more than a pull-behind and stopped just before dropping an axle into a ditch. My helper hollered at me before I almost pulled away with the umbilical still plugged in. Now I have graduated to the bigger class of errors
1. figured the brake controller that came with my "new-to-me" truck was good enough. Heck it was an almost dead copy of one my Dad had back in the 70's. It led to numbers 2 and 3 below.
2. The Brake controller didn't warn me when the connector fell out and I had to stop the rig using only the truck brakes from highway speed.
3. The Brake controller didn't warn me when the connector fell out and by the time I got stopped the connector and cable had undergone some modifications.
Now I can spell "Prodigy" and I have a new connector and cable.
4. Nobody told me that an awning was supposed to be retracted when it rains. In this part of Texas a rain as almost always preceeded by a 5 to 10 minute wind event. It is generally strong enough to re-arrange patio furniture (the iron kind). Seems to have had an effect on the awning as well. I'm not sure yet, but I smell $$.
5. Trying to hook-up by raising the nose of the 5ver to match the hitch requires that you raise the rear stabilizers first. Well I know that... now. But I didn't know it yesterday. They kinda got a kink in them. And I thought the front jacks were moving a bit slow.. oh nevermind I guess I was lucky that the front jacks were stronger than the stabilizers.
So I know that none of these errors are new, but I am trying for the World's record error-in-a-row / different error every day blue ribbon champion of the universe title.
Gotta go now so I can think of a new one. I almost had one, but moved my foot just before uncapping the sewer conn so I could hook-up the hose. There was about a cupful of strange fluid there. Missed me by...That Much.

RE: RV dump install at home - tips needed.

Go vertical just enough to make the slant correct for the rest of the run. Anything over that just causes problems as mentioned. Oh yeah, when you get the permit check to make sure you can pour concrete or finish out before the inspection. Sometimes they get picky and that could create work you didn't plan on.
